The MSU Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and Surgery service is directed and led by diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and supported by 24-hour licensed veterinary technicians. The service provides urgent evaluation and emergent treatment for all large animal species including horses, ruminants (cattle, sheep and goats), camelids (llamas and alpacas), and pigs.

Please note: The Veterinary Medical Center can no longer assist with the loading/unloading of patients. However, if your animal necessitates sedation, please inform a staff member. Note: Sedation requests are administered based on team member availability. Should you experience a short delay, we respectfully ask for your patience and consideration.
Common reasons patients are seen by the emergency service include:
- Colic
- Abdominal exploratory surgery
- Trauma, including lacerations, fractures, and blunt trauma
- Colitis
- Dystocia
- Neonatal care
- Urinary obstruction
- Acute neurologic disease
- Pneumonia
- Acute respiratory obstructions
The MSU Large Animal Clinic is equipped with full service triage facilities, radiography, MRI, CT, ultrasonography, endoscopy/gastroscopy, arthroscopy and 4 operating rooms with induction and recovery suites. Intensive care is provided by dedicated, compassionate specialist and nurses, including board certified criticalists, internists, surgeons, anesthetists, and radiologists.
